Wireless Antenna mod for the Ouya

Installing a Wireless Antenna mod on your Ouya Console!

The Ouya while it does have a Wireless-N chip the quality of reception has a lot to be desired for it’s wireless antenna. Consisting of a tiny block on the motherboard which behaves like a 3dbi antenna that one would expect on a Cel-Phone; The overall reception of wireless traffic coming into your Ouya especially at a distance is problematic. Initially I did this mod in an attempt to alleviate Bluetooth lag on my Ouya joysticks as the chip-set that Ouya used carries both the Internet and Bluetooth traffic over the same wireless antenna. While it didn’t help with the Joystick reception. It did help considerably with wireless traffic.

Archived – RootMyOuya.1.1.apk

RootMyOuya is now archived.

12/28/2014 – Since the Chickcharney update of Ouya the RootMyOuya.1.1.apk is no longer usable. After further investigation with trying to install this program manually and checking the logcat files. It appears that due to the updates the Ouya corperation has deemed that this package is no longer signed. I shall still keep the APK up on my site for archival reasons. But when it comes to newer Ouya’s updated past 11/3/2014. If you have installed the RootMyOuya.1.1.apk prior to Chickcharney like I did you probably will not notice anything until you attempt to re-install this apk.

Xbox Wireless Receiver hacks.

A brief blog entry about receiver hacking

A while back I talked about the Chinese Xbox wireless receiver for Xbox360 Wireless Controllers  and how to configure it. You can get these on Ebay for very cheap “I got mine for about $7 with free S&H. Some would also call these controllers ‘fake’ as they are not certified by Microsoft. Which out of the box they do not work, you have to setup the driver on windows as described in my last entry. One of the sections that I skimmed over the android side and how it all works. Well, this is a quick blog entry showing what I did after I received my controller from china.

Ouya Controller Wear and Tear

The slow destruction of an Ouya Controller after 1 year of moderate use.

I don’t think I would consider myself an aggressive gamer to really abuse the Ouya Controller. I have a total of 63 games loaded on my Ouya with over half of them being side-loaded emulators coupled with all of the things I learned in previous blogs about this consoles journey. Multiple times I have re-rooted this Ouya and even had to firmware reset it a few times as well. Though out all of this the controller is the real item that takes the beating in any game console. I know some of this will view my blog as being nitpicky however there are people who want to take care of their consoles and treat them with a fair amount of respect so that it can last a very long time. Read on if you want to know more or just want to take notes if you are buying a used Ouya Controller on the used market.

Ouya Support – Other troubleshooting issues.

Welcome to Ouya Support time with S-Config!

I notice a lot of people come to my site for various support topics for the Ouya and I figured that I should make an article dealing with some of the Ouya Support in terms of troubleshooting issues that were simply too small to exist under one article. These are questions which pop up time and time again in forums as well as on reviewers that decide is a fatal flaw of the console. Just a kind note that your Ouya has a 1 year warranty from the time of your purchase to be sure to keep that sales receipt in case something catastrophic happens to it.

Ouya USB Speed Test – Partitions

Testing the Ouya USB ports.

Ouya USB is great really! It gives the Ouya extra space to store games, ROMs, pictures, practicly everything that you would otherwise have problems with within the confines of estimated 3.2GB of free space that is on internal memory because the Android OS is taking up over half of the space! However, one of the annoyances that people do complain about is how long it takes to scan games. A lot of this has to do with the quality of USB thumbdrive that you are using. But could it be something more? Could it be the way that our drive is formatted that is slowing down the Ouya? What I am talking about is partitioning your USB Drive to something other then the normality in order to attain stability and speed out from your Ouys USB device.

PS3 Third Party a.k.a. The P3 Controller

The PS3 (Playstation) Third Party P3 Controller.

For those who do not play much on Ebay there was a lot of issues with purchasing controllers for the PlayStation 3 in regards to china making a ton of knock off controllers. These third party or P3 controllers looked like a Sony PlayStation 3 controller except that if you ever picked one up and start pressing the buttons or pushing the analog stick around you know that there is something not quite right with them.

Chinese Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver Driver setup

Wireless Receiver for the Xbox 360 from China has arrived.

Wireless Receiver for my Xbox 360 controller (Sometimes referred to as a wireless dongle) from China is one of those tools that has become more and more relevant in the gaming industry with console ports and couch co-ops. And unlike other types of electronics from China where it was inferior or simply was nothing more then a piece of plastic or an identifier chip saying what it was but it really did nothing at all. This adapter from china actually does work! But it needs the right drivers!
